  • Last.FM - makes recommendations and creates playists and stations based on 'scrobbling', a process that records your listening habits and sends this into to a server. the site's player is open source and the Audioscrobble Web Services API is open, potentially useful for OMRAS2 research?
  • MyStrands - also for recommendations, playlists, and social networking, includes an open developer interface called openStrands
  • Goombah - recommendations and social networking, streaming of recs via ad-based Napster
  • Slacker - some social networking w/ a focus on music recommendation, doesn't work in UK
  • stage.fm - music site
  • UpTo11 - music recommendations based on 'like-minded people'
  • Mercora - this is 'DJ' driven, as in listeners create playlists...
  • Mog - music site w/ a recommendation feature and software
  • Plurn - playlist burner? social playlist site
  • MusicMobs - social playlist site
  • Yahoo! LAUNCHcast - aggregation of internet radio stations, create a personal radio station, share station w/ other users
  • blogmusik - just stumbled on this one. Does anyone know anything about it? Seems like yamc (yet another music community)
  • Hype Machine - a music blogging community w/ lots of cool features
  • Foxy Tunes - a music information aggregator
  • Foafing the music - semantic foaf-based music recommendation.

  • Anywhere.fm - store your music online and recs by friend radio...
  • finetune.com - yet another social playlisting site

  • OWL Music - pretty awesome cc content-based search engine

  • Search Sounds - UPF's content-based music search engine
  • pandora - Pandora is powered by the Music Genome Project where expert listeners fill out 400 fields for each artist/tune.
  • music-map - this is part of the GNOD project, based on AI that learns from user input about music preferences. totally worth checking out.
  • musicovery - the interface is cool, but the recommendations are mediocre
  • liveplasma - very pretty interface. recommendations are mediocre. not sure how it works.
  • FineTune.com - Playlist generation...
  • Sound Flavor - Playlist generation, an 'inside source' says it is entirely based on expert listeners
  • Music Mesh - yet another one...
  • Tangerine! - this playlist generation seems to be the thing. This one is based around an iTunes plugin and color. interesting interface with 'drawable' playlists.
  • Jango - pandora-style radio site

Commercial MIR Tech 4 License

  • Music IP - content-based music search engine technology for license, based in LA
  • Gracenote Discover - music recommendation by the CDDB people. uses a combo of music experts, DSP, and music community info

Academic MIR projects of note

  • Islands of Music - This system was basically Elias Pampalk's PhD. Basically the first system to think about intuitive interfaces to collection exploration and based on extracted metadata (at least partially)
  • Brain Tuning - an international collaboration investigating the processing of music in the brain - authors of the MIR Toolbox
  • Resources for Music and Science - a list of music-science-related resources provided by the Music and Science Group of the University of London's Institute of Musical Research.
